Review: Snow White, Westovian Theatre, South Shields
PANTO season’s not over yet – thanks to the Westovians!
And the society’s rendition of Snow White is fun, silly and chaotic - exactly what a pantomime should be.
The main attraction was hilarious double act Dame Hattie Dimple (Stephen R Sullivan) and Chuckles (Craig Richardson), who had the audience in stitches with their comic capers and double entendres.
The play, written by the Westovians’ own Philip Meeks, follows the basic storyline of the Disney film, but was given a Russian theme.
Rachael Walsh was brilliant as Queen Malicia, making the perfect panto baddie.
The show contained some great songs, with Snow White (Natasha Haws) giving a beautiful rendition of Take That’s Rule the World, and Prince Alexei (Kylie Ford) giving an equally impressive performance of Queen’s I Want to Break Free.
Chuckles’s ‘interpretive dance’ to the Baywatch theme song was side-splittingly funny.
Add in a good gunging, plenty of ‘he’s behind yous’, a few local references, and seven adorable kids playing the part of the dwarves, and you’ve got a brilliant night.
In parts, some of the actors were hard to hear, but all in all, a great show.
It runs until Saturday.
