Panto interrupted by fire alarm - oh yes it was!
CINDERELLA had to move quickly in her glass slippers after a pantomime cast was forced to flee the stage when a fire alarm disrupted a production in South Tyneside.
The alarm bells sounded during the second half of the Jarrow Musical Theatre Company’s performance of Cinderella at Jarrow Community Centre on Saturday night.
The 30-strong cast and the audience of more than 250 people were forced to stand outside the centre in Cambrian Street, for about 20 minutes while firefighters checked the building.
But it proved to be a false alarm, and the cast were able to return to the stage.
Sandra Connolly, the theatre company’s publicity co-ordinator, said: “Cinderella was just about to sing one of her songs when the alarm went off.
“Some of the cast were getting changed into different costumes, but we all had to get out of the fire exit at the back of the building.”
Mrs Connolly, who was a member of the chorus line in the pantomime, alongside her husband Terry, said the pantomime, which started at 5pm and finished after 9pm, had an extra special ending.
She added: “We got back inside, and carried on as if nothing had happened.”
The fire service confirmed there had been no fire, and Mrs Connolly believes the alarm may have been triggered by smoke machines used during the production.
