Disappointed fans head in One Direction
BOY band fans from South Tyneside who missed out on tickets after queuing for 15 hours will finally get to see their idols.
Eight girls camped outside Newcastle City Hall in October to buy tickets for One Direction’s gig on Tuesday.
But a last minute free-for-all saw crowds push to the front of the queue, and only four of them managed to get a pass.
Now bosses at the venue have made amends by providing the girls with tickets.
The girls, all members of Lumsdale Theatre Arts, a dance group based at Back Beach Road, South Shields, include 14-year-old Elisha Cook, of St Mary’s Avenue, South Shields. Her mother, Jean Cook said: “The City Hall contacted us to say some tickets had become available, and asked if the girls would like to buy them.
“This was a big relief for them all. They are all good friends and it had looked as though only half of them were going to go.
“Even the four girls who had tickets weren’t excited about the gig because they thought their friends were going to miss out.”
She added: “What happened was unfortunate, and it wasn’t fair. They queued for hours, but other people rushed to the front at the last minute. In the end, it’s a happy ending, and I am pleased for them.
“I am grateful to the City Hall for being so accommodating, and I am sure One Direction won’t disappoint on the night of the gig.”
A spokesman for the venue said they had received a number of complaints from people who missed out on tickets.
He said: “A few people made complaints after missing out. We have managed to accommodate them for the event. There has been huge demand for this concert and, unfortunately, we have not been able to get tickets to everyone who wants to go.”
When the tickets went on sale last October, crowds of between 200 and 300 turned up. Despite the efforts of the venue’s security staff to maintain an orderly queue, some people pushed forward during a last-minute surge.
The spokesman added: “What happened in October was unprecedented, and we did not expect that many people to turn up. We are confident it won’t happen again, and look forward to hosting similar events in the future.”
