Album review: Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
LANA DEL REY ... Born To Die (Interscope)
THE 25-year old New Yorker rode an unprecedented wave of hype last year, with her singles, including the stunning Video Games, sending online communities into pandemonium.
However, a lot of that talk centred around her authenticity, and though such criticism seemed harsh at the time, this major label debut proves such questions were justified.
Whoever wrote them, Video Games and follow-up single Born To Die are indisputably brilliant, but of the 10 other tracks here, only Off To The Races even comes close to them.
The rest range from average to downright terrible, with a frankly pathetic second half making a mockery of the hype that’s been bubbling for the past six months.
This was supposed to be one of the albums of the year; instead it’s a frontrunner as the biggest disappointment.
If you were about to buy it on the back of the singles, I can only advise you to think twice. 4/10. AW
