Live review: Cherry Ghost, The Cluny, Newcastle

CHERRY GHOST ... don't seem set to make a breakthrough any time soon.

CHERRY GHOST ... don't seem set to make a breakthrough any time soon.

WITH two heartfelt albums under his belt, Simon Aldred (aka Cherry Ghost) is still something of a cult concern.

And with just one hit, the anthemic People Help The People – the band don’t seem like making a breakthrough any time soon.

But Aldred’s tales of family struggles, lost loves and drunken underdogs are perfect for the smaller stage.

And, judging by the amount of people packed into The Cluny, he evidently has plenty of fans waiting to hear what will follow 2010’s Beneath the Burning Shoreline.

The gig wasn’t a showcase for new material though.

Aldred was on a short acoustic tour, returning to the original versions of the songs that, fleshed out, made it on to the first two albums.

Hearing tracks like 4am, Mathematics and Thirst For Romance stripped back brought a new perspective to them, giving their bittersweet lyrics more space to breathe than the recorded versions.

Aldred was in fine voice, his rich baritone filling the room and sounding at times like Richard Hawley.

Other highlights included a cover of Whitney Houston’s How Will I Know and the encore, Dead Man’s Suit.

Hopefully Cherry Ghost will be back with another album soon, but until then I’ll be revisiting the first two in a fresh light.
