Futureheads set to release brave new album
THE FUTUREHEADS ... set for an a capella album and acoustic tour.
INDIE-rock band The Futureheads are set to return with possibly their boldest move yet.
After leaving their record company, curating their own festival and setting up their own label, they are now set to release an album recorded entirely in the a cappella style.
Rant, their fifth studio effort, is due out in the spring, and they are embarking on The A Capella and Acoustic Tour to promote it.
It includes a date in Hall Two of The Sage Gateshead on Sunday, April 8.
A spokesman for the Sunderland band said: “Over a year ago we started promising people that we would make an a cappella record – an album with no instrumentation, just the four of us, in the studio, arranging songs for the human voice.
“Well, the album has finally arrived – we’ve called it Rant and we’re releasing it on April 2.
“When you’ve played guitars, drums, keyboards, whatever, for many years, you find your hands start to want to automatically play familiar notes, familiar chords, familiar melodies every time you pick up the instrument.
“With your voice, that simply doesn’t happen, it’s a fresh start every time. The sky’s the limit and it has been since birth. With this in mind, the a cappella record has us making noise like never before, and hopefully you’ll hear The Futureheads in a new way, too.
“We’re not turning our back on the ‘rock’ forever, we just want you to hear us like this, because four-part harmony has been so important in the music we’ve made since day one.
“What excites us about this record is that it’s totally different to anything we’ve ever released in the past.
“We’ve re-arranged some Futureheads songs from our back catalogue, and worked on interpretations of some folk classics as well. There are a handful of covers that may surprise you, too.
“The acoustic stuff for the tour will feature all sorts – banjos, 12-strings, mandolins – Jaff’s even been mastering the cello!”
The tracklisting for Rant includes old Futureheads favourites Meantime, Robot and Man Ray, traditional folk song The Keeper and The No 1 Song In Heaven by Sparks.
Tickets for The Sage gig, priced £15, are on sale now from 443 4661.
It features special guests The Cornshed Sisters, whose new album, Tell Tales, is out on April 9.
