THERE'S no chance of students at Joe McElderry's former school forgetting to vote this weekend.
A huge 'Go Joe' banner has been hung up outside Harton Technology College in South Shields, where he first got the chance to perform on stage.

The 18-year-old is now down to the final five in the competition – and just two weeks away from the fina
l after blasting out Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me last weekend and receiving a standing ovation.

Joe's face can also be seen on plasma screens around the Lisle Road school and it's no secret that everyone is rooting for him to win.

Among those supporting him is former drama teacher Harry Lynch.
Mr Lynch cast Joe as Danny in the school production of the musical Grease two years ago, and a star was born.

He said: "In 2007 we auditioned for Grease. Usually, students who have 'come up through the ranks' tend to get the lead roles.

"However, that year, a complete unknown – well, to the school's shows anyway – Joe McElderry, showed up and blew us away. Theshow was one of our greatest successes and Joe and his singing was certainly one of the highlights."

Headteacher Ken Gibson has been tuning in to see Joe's performances and is definitely impressed.

He said: "Joe gets better and better with every performance, and Saturday's performance was absolutely magnificent – and the best of the series by any contestant!

"He is a fabulous role model for young people and he remains so down-to-earth despite the huge media attention he is now faced with.

"I spoke to him last week again and wished him all the very best from everyone at Harton, and he was so grateful for all the support he is receiving.

"I just hope and pray that he makes the final and I think he has a fantastic chance of winning the whole show.

"He has the best voice by far and the way he has conducted himself throughout the show has been quite incredible. Whatever happens now, he is destined for absolute stardom and he fully deserves any success he gets!"

The banner was supplied by printing company Agrafica, based in South Shields.
