Will I ever see Hebburn revamp?

AT last a councillor has put his head above the parapet regarding the long-overdue regeneration of Hebburn ('New Asda store bid is welcomed', Gazette, Monday).

I live in his demolition site, and have had to endure being told that my flat may be demolished or, depending on the whims of South Tyneside Homes (a private housing contractor), it may not.

This has been going on for at least five years.

I am wondering if I will ever see the said refurbishments that could be on offer if Tesco, one of the best businesses in Britain, were ever to be given the chance to get on with the job.

A lot of people have moved out already because they were sold the 'complete regeneration' theme.

If this was untrue, then a smaller company than Tesco should have been allowed to move council tenants to further their own private housing projects.

The new Asda proposal is on a pitifully small scale compared with Tesco's great offer.

It's beginning to look more like Watergate than Watergate.

It is sheer torture not knowing if you have a home or not.

If only we had our real council back, and people really did have someone who could keep them properly informed.

What a pity it is that we can only talk about democracy, and not actually have any.

Jean Paisley,

Kensington Court,

Hebburn.
