MOTORISTS in a Boldon Colliery housing estate are being warned to drive more safely after the speed limit was slashed.

The new 20mph limit in Harden Park was agreed in principle last year, but has only just come into force.

Ward councillors Sherie Murphy, Joanne Bell and Alison Strike, who were on hand to witness the new signs go up, say the move was necessary to improve safety in the area.

Coun Murphy, who lives in the estate, said: “When I stood for election last year, residents approached me about this, knowing that I live on Harden Park.

“So I made it my business to find out why there seemed to have been a delay, and it turned out that all that was needed to complete the legal process was the public consultation with affected residents.

“So I pressed the council’s traffic section to do this, and residents responded with overwhelming support for lowering the limit.

“I realise that it can seem an awful lot of red tape to, in effect, change some signs, but the residents know that there is always more to it than that, and they have been very patient.”

Coun Bell added: “Although Harden Park is designed to make high speeds very difficult, residents were concerned that on parts of Romsey Drive, traffic turning in from the 40mph zone on Abingdon Way was still moving much too quickly.

“This is a residential estate where children play outside and families walk their dogs, so even 30mph can be quite dangerous.

“I am delighted that the residents have finally got what they wanted, and motorists will be alerted to the fact they simply must slow down.”

Coun Strike confirmed that work to improve road markings in the estate, so drivers know who has priority at junctions, will also be completed by next month.

And how will the speed restriction be enforced?

Abingdon Way, may have a surplus of signs denoting cycle and footpath sharing, I will check tomorrow when I walk along it, but it most certainly has a lack of 40mph repeater signs. The speed of some morons needs to be reduced becuase people also need to CROSS roads, and even, dare I say it, cycle on them. There is one point on which I would agree, there SHOULD be no need for a 20mph speed limit on this estate, since no one with any sense would drive at more than that speed as a matter of course in the estate. There in lies the problem or course.

I just wonder what you guys suggest to control the speed of some of these idiots? There is a stretch of road outside my house which is approx 70 metres long, however there are a few morons who try to accelerate as much as they can along the short stretch. Something has to be done.

Yawn....yet more pointless signage and limits. Soon it'll be quicker to walk around South Tyneside than attempt to drive anywhere. Since when do kids play and people walk their dogs in the road anyway...? Plenty of grass around the Boldon area.

Have you noticed the amount of road signs around South Tyneside? The pavement opposite this estate [Abingdon Way] has footpathcyclepath signs on EVERY lamp post, More waste from STMBC.

Great, more pointless signs to litter the streetscene. Did anyone ever do over 20mph around Harden Park anyway? Errmm No, that's because of the layout of the streets. Pointless waste of money.
