Shields pub up for sale at knockdown price

UP FOR GRABS ... the closed-down Dock pub at Tyne Dock is for sale with an 80,000 asking price.

UP FOR GRABS ... the closed-down Dock pub at Tyne Dock is for sale with an 80,000 asking price.

A SHUT-DOWN pub could be sold for a pint-size price to a buyer with spare change in their pocket.

The Dock has gone on the market for just £80,000 – less than would be expected during boom times.

But the South Shields boozer’s seller says the sobering price tag could attract a cash-rich buyer and lead to a quick sale.

Mark Worley, associate director of sales agent Christie and Co, said: “It is going for less than we thought.

“It is a sign of the times that it is so cheap.

“But it is a good price and there are people around who are cash-rich and can buy without having to go to their bank.

“Pubs like this are quite often rejuvenated when they are sold into private hands.

“Local businessmen or entrepreneurs sometimes just fancy owning their own pub.”

Pub up for sale as owner seeks to cut costs

The watering hole in Hudson Street, Tyne Dock, closed about a year ago and has since been stripped of its furnishings.

But in the good times it boasted front and rear bars and a function room.

Also included in the sale is a five-room upstairs flat and car parking spaces.

No offers have been made, or direct interest shown in the pub, which has been put up for sale by an unnamed national chain.

Mr Worley, based at national firm Christie’s Newcastle office, said the premises could stay as a pub, but similar sales in recent years had led to drastic changes in business use. It is believed other options could include conversion into retail premises or food outlets, such as an Indian or Chinese restaurant.

He added: “It has been totally stripped out. As all pubs are unique, we cannot yet know what might become of it.

“Hopefully, the ‘for sale’ signs will go up in the next few days and we will then get more idea of what will happen.

“We are keen for the sale to be done and dusted. There is no sales record with this pub, so we will wait and see.”

Eureka was finished , good in its day but needed a massive amount of money just to bring it up to scratch the Dock ,still looks okay , all it needs is customers with cash in their pockets ......as we are talking about shields , might be to hard to find ....

@coggage. I wasnt talking about the interior as that is cosmetic and can be easily fixed. I was mentioning the fact that they want to keep buildings like the Dock standing but want to flatten original pubs with good architecture.

Last time I was in the Eureka, a number of years ago, it was a filthy, smelly, run-down hovel with furniture and carpets that were so stained and greasy it was enough to turn your stomach. My mates and I rapidly finished our drinks, and we left in disgust. I've seen cow-sheds that looked in a better state.

As far as I remember, that place has never been anything but a haven for drug deals andor fighting. Why don't the council buy the lease, bulldoze the place, and build a traffic warden scholarship academy?
