War memories to be documented forever

THE generation that lived through the Second World War is growing older, which means it is becoming increasingly important to record their experiences.

“If we don’t share memories, they will be lost,” says South Shields documentary film maker Gary Wilkinson.

He is starting work on a new film, War on South Tyneside, and is looking for people with a story to tell of the impact of both world wars on them and their families.

“It might well be the bombing of Princess Street, Jarrow, or the bombing of the Market Place in Shields,” says Gary.

Or, he says, seeing HMS Kelly limping back into the Tyne for repair, as seen here - something she did twice, once after striking a mine off the river in 1939 when escorting tugs goings to the assistance of the tanker Atheltemplar, and again the following year, after she was torpedoed during the Battle of Norway.

If you have any memories to share, you can e-mail Gary at northeasternfilms@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 0191 456 3594.

By the way, due to popular demand, two more screenings of Gary’s films, The Hills of Holborn and Tyne Stories, are to be given in South Shields Library Theatre on Wednesday, February 8 at 2pm.

You can get your free ticket from the Central Library in advance.
