Tradesmen’s team had their own Demba Baa!

OH dear, this makes you think, not so much of who ate all the pies, but who was IN all the pies!

It might be a dog that’s got everyone talking in football and legal circles at the minute.

But these players had a quite different four-legged friend.

Isn’t this a fabulous picture, if for no other reason than that it has you wondering if the mascot, here, got taken along to every match, and if so, of how it comported itself.

The photograph has been another recent find by our good friend Kevin Blair.

All we know about it is that it shows members of South Shields Tradesmen’s AFC during their 1924-1925 season.

The photographer was HG Hamilton, whose studio was in Ocean Road. opposite where Morrison’s supermarket is now.

I can’t find any references in our cuttings to this tradesmen’s side, which makes me wonder if it had already gone before the last war. Perhaps someone can tell us more.

In fact, given that these are tradesmen, was one of these players/officials a butcher, hence Dolly there?!
