Taking a trip down memory lane

ASPIRING ... St Stephens Church. The surrounding area was on the brink of change.

IT’S sobering to be reminded of how, walking just a few hundreds yards from the centre of Shields, you’d have once been met with quite different vistas to now.

North and south of Ocean Road and King Street was, essentially, still a 19th century town, long terraces extending to either side.

You can glimpse some of the old ones on the Lawe in this rather good picture of St Stephen’s Church, taken – or so it looks – when its garden was being laid out, following the clearance of most of the church’s graveyard.

It’s one of those that will feature in the film DVD that I mentioned that Janet Wylie and her sister, Jackie, are making about central Shields – down town and up to the Lawe – featuring photographs from Shields man Bill Clavery’s extensive collection.

They would like to hear your own memories of the area.

By the way, Janet would also like to hear again from the daughter of Mrs Stoddard, who had a Vaux off-licence on the corner of Edith Street.

“She gave me three photos of her mother’s shop and I would like to talk to her again,” says Janet.

She can be contacted on 0191 4554830, or 07954413542 or by e-mail at 54janet@live.co.uk
