WEDDING BELLES...South Shields Museum would love to see pictures of your big day.

WAS it in a wartime wedding dress made from parachute silk and with a cardboard ‘cake’ over a plain sponge?

Or perhaps you raised the hemline – and perhaps a few eyebrows? – with a more ‘with-it’ do a generation later.

In short, how did you get married?

South Shields Museum would love to know because this spring, they will be staging an exhibition about weddings.

And they’re after your photographs.

“We want people to bring in wedding photos taken in South Tyneside, so that we can copy them and display them in the exhibition,” says assistant keeper of history, Adam Bell.

“We’re looking for one photo per wedding, rather than whole albums, and the originals will be returned to the lenders, once we’ve copied them.”

The museum doesn’t mind when the photographs date from. The one you see here is from my own family album. This is the 1940s.

“They could be 1900, they could be 1960, they could even be 2012,” says Adam.

People taking along wedding photos, however, should be willing to let them be put on display, or have permission to do so.

Photos can be left with staff at the reception desk at the museum and contact details taken, so that the pictures can be returned.

“I’m hoping that we’ll have a great response.” says Adam, who hopes that the exhibition will reflect a range of eras and wedding venues across the borough.
