Remember the early days of clubbing?

CHEERS...recalling, its thought, the old Northern Club in Bath Street.

CHEERS...recalling, its thought, the old Northern Club in Bath Street.

THE club has always had its own place in the social history of the North East of England.

Sadly, many of these institutions were already in decline even before the smoking ban and changes in drinking habits began to cut a swathe through the ranks of their compatriots, the pubs.

In Shields, there used to be a clutch of such traditional clubs in and around Mile End Road. Most have since been turned into nightspots, although Brigham’s survives.

This picture is thought to have been taken inside its neighbour, the Northern Club, which opened in what then still Bath Street (now Coston Drive) in 1964.

It was originally for employees of Northern General Transport.

Ken Taylor, who has sent it in, says: “I guess that it is the old Northern Club as some of the guys have bus uniforms on.”

Ken’s late father, Bill Taylor, is right at the back, just under the window. “Someone has put a little ‘X’ next to him.”

Of the others, Ken also recognises Duncan Stephenson, in front of the notice board towards the left, and Jeff Burns – he thinks – who is bottom right.

“But I’m sure other people could put names to them better than me.”
