Race is on to identify these runners

ON THE ROAD...but who were these competitors and where was the race?

ON THE ROAD...but who were these competitors and where was the race?

RUNNING, as a sport, has a long and honourable history around here.

You’ve only to think of South Shields Harriers, who can trace their history back to the turn of last century.

Also walking: Think of Tom Payne, who held the world’s non-stop record in his day, on either side of the First World War.

But what do you think is going on here?

This intriguing picture comes from Kevin Blair but sadly there is no date for it.

It’s assumed that this event was taking place in South Shields, because the photographer was a W Laws, of 154 South Eldon Street in the town.

Interestingly, though, that address at around the time this picture was taken wasn’t listed as a photographer’s but as a drug stores.

The W stood for Walter, though that doesn’t rule out another Mr Laws who wielded a camera. If this is South Shields, however, I can’t, I’m afraid, identify the exact location.

There are railway wagons running at a height in the background and I have to say that my first thought was that this might have been the Commercial Road area but, really, it’s open to all speculation.

It looks like a walking race. How about somewhere near the Boldon Flats and Brockley Whins railway line.
