More memories of grammar school days

THEY would be modestly impressed, I think, to know that their memory crossed not only the years but also oceans.
I’m talking about staff of the old Girls’ Grammar School in Shields, some of whom we saw recently at an Old Girls’ Association dinner 40 years or so ago.
I’ve since heard online from old girl Olga Mitchelmore, who loved the picture, she says.
“It brings back memories for me too,” says Olga.
“Miss Goudie was my English teacher and I adored her.”
But she was terrified, she says, of “The Ram,” headmistress Dr Ramsden.
“Although I’m sure she was working in my best interests when I was hauled to her office for copying from my fellow student. It was discovered that I needed spectacles and didn’t know it!
“Miss Richardson was my final form teacher but I didn’t recognise her in this photo.
“I think it was Miss Goudie who organised a book token for me when I left the school to go to Australia in 1957. I took it to the library and used it for a copy of Doctor at Sea – I loved Dirk Bogarde at the time. I still have it.”
In the picture here, the-by-then head, Gillian Harris, and Miss Annie Goudie, second left, are seen, again nearly 40 years ago, presenting gifts to retiring staff members Annie Brewis, who had been with the school since early on during the Second World War; Muriel Lishman, and Beryl Hargreaves.
