Historic view from up on high

HISTORIC VIEW ... over Jarrow Slake and the Tyne, probably just after the First World War.

ISN’T this a corker of a picture?

This is the Tyne, in and around Jarrow Slake and the swinging area, in all its industrial glory, it’s thought just after the First World War.

It’s been turned up by Kevin Blair and was taken by the Aircraft Manufacturing Co Ltd, of Hendon, which he has discovered was only in existence between about 1912 and 1920.

Certainly, as Kevin points out, the Shell Mex complex, which was begun in about 1920, isn’t on the picture, which helps to approximate the date.

The picture rewards close study.

With the help of Vin Mullen and Ron French, Kevin has been able to put names to locations, such as, in Jarrow, the old Picture House, and the Picture Theatre, which became the Empire.

The old ferry landing can also be seen, up from the Mercantile dry dock, as can the old East Ferry Inn by the timber ponds.

Beyond the timber ponds is the floating isolation hospital, built by Wood, Skinner in 1886 and broken up in 1930.

And beyond that is the Admiralty Floating Dock, which was towed from Sheerness in 1915 and placed in the Slake until 1923, its purpose being to repair warships during the First World War.

“Northumberland Dock, with its staiths, is visible on the left of the photo, as is Whitehill Point and the Albert Edward Dock,” says Kevin.
