Hero's life subject of group talk

HE'S become an iconic figure in two hemispheres.

Yet almost a century after his death in the killing fields of Gallipoli, the story of South Shields-born John Simpson Kirkpatrick is still being added to.

You can hear more about The Man With The Donkey – revered, still, by the ANZAC forces with which he served during the First World War – at a talk in the town next Wednesday evening.

The venue is the Stag's Head pub in Fowler Street, when the South Tyneside branch of the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society (NDFHS) welcomes James Mulholland as its guest speaker.

James is treasurer of South Shields Local History Society and he'll be speaking about his extensive researches into Kirkpatrick's early life in the town. All are welcome.

By the way, the NDFHS is also holding an Irish Ancestry Day on March 20, between 10am and 3.30pm, at St Mary's Heritage Centre, Gateshead.

I'm told there is already considerable interest in the event – which is perhaps to be expected given the number of people in North East England who have at least one Irish ancestor or more.
