Think about creating jobs, not just taking them

I’LL start this week by showcasing some of the fantastic events and organisations in the North East which are striving to help bring the business community together.

St Geordie’s Day is a celebration of North East England. Taking place on the Friday before St George’s Day each year, it is set to become part of the business social calendar.

It aims to raise money for local charities, with pomp, ceremony, a red rose, roast beef and real ale.

Organised by a politically-neutral group of business people who want to celebrate a day of patriotism and network with like-minded people of the North East based business community, I think it is a fantastic idea, and a positive move to once again put this part of the world on the map.

Another new online organisation helping to promote the North East is The North East Hub. If you have a charity, business, website, blog etc that you would like to promote, get in touch with these guys and they’ll help you out - and it’s FREE!

I can’t help but notice that each week I write and research for my column the number of unemployed people in our region keeps rising.

According to latest figures, there are 15 people fighting for every job in South Tyneside alone!

This means entrepreneurship is crucial. The economy needs more people to set up businesses with strong foundations to then go on to hopefully create jobs.

The idea of CREATING a job and not just TAKING one should be at the forefront of people’s thinking.

Self-employment isn’t for everyone, but it is an option that I believe should be more widely explored.

I was watching TV last week and the latest version of Fame was on.

I hadn’t seen the previous version and only got to catch the end of this one, but there was a short speech at the end that I felt really inspired by and wanted to share.

It’s a little cheesy, but the words and overall purpose are very powerful. It’s about success...

“There are some things success is not, it’s not fame, it’s not money or power. Success is waking up in the morning so excited about what you have to do, that you literally fly out the door.

It’s getting to work with people you love. Success is connecting with the world, and making people feel, it’s finding a way to bind together people who have nothing in common but a dream.

It’s falling asleep at night knowing you did the best job you could. Success is joy, and freedom, and friendship .. and success is love.”

I wonder just how many people feel they have or are positively moving towards ‘success’.

In tough times we need to not lose sight of our ultimate ambitions and keep that ‘go for it’ attitude not just with ourselves, but it is important to spread positivity in a world that, especially through the media, breeds negativity.

What will you do that will be your finest hour?
